Artist Statement
The little things catch my attention. I like the small spaces in between vines and petal. Inspired by the Arts and Crafts Movement, my compositions follow William Morris' maxim, "the less the better" - I focus on the meticulous placement of a few elements and then adorn them. Much of my work is inspired by my own experience of being a woman living in the city. Influenced by graffiti, nature, and the physical structures of urban living, I aim to make the viewer feel as though they have been swept up in the chaos of an emotional thunderstorm complicated by the social expectations of survival in 2019.
My larger paintings follow the same philosophy of "the less the better" but are also rooted in a spirit of collaboration. Often I paint next to another artist, and collaboration comes where our pieces connect. When I teach community art workshops and classes, I tend to focus on facilitating spaces so that my students can practice collaboration. Collaboration tightens the bonds of community. Creating a mural together teaches all the participants important life lessons about conflict, communication, and sharing.
